70 years of David's Life

#1 Postby Marion » Sun Feb 12, 2017 8:41 am

Shabbat Shalom!

Last Shabbat, we were discussing the 70 years of life that was given to King David by Adam. I was wondering if it was possible for Adam to do so because of teshuva—repentance? Although David turned away from the Lord by killing his general, and taking his wife, Bathsheba for himself, we can see in the psalms that he was repentant of his missing of the mark, and truly sought to follow in the ways of the Holy One.

To me, this draws a parallel between teshuva-repentance and emunah-faith. If David didn't have faith, he wouldn't have repented. Repenting necessitates faith that God will provide, that the power of God is greater than the power in myself. I'm also wondering is this is part of the reason that Judaism holds David in such high regard. Hearing his story over the years, this never made any sense to me. I was just hearing of a King who got too full of himself and really messed up. The difference between David and other kings is David sought to do better. He didn't let the shortcomings of the world come between him and God, or the people and God. Because of his repentance, the Messiah could come into being, Praise God!

Blessings and Shalom,
Marion

Grace and peace to you from Messiah Yeshua!

There is something to be said of the glaring imperfections and errors we encounter in the stories of many of the men and women of God in the Holy Scriptures, such as we see with King David, and King Solomon after him. Though, indeed, having imperfections and at times falling into great error, or sin, nevertheless they were men and women of God, holy people, and embodied various grades of spiritual realization and served the Lord throughout their lives. If you consider it, given that we also have our imperfections and weaknesses, and at times fall into error, sin, there is a very affirmative and hopeful message in this for us, that nevertheless we also may be men and women of God, holy people, and experience various grades of spiritual realization, and so, we too, are to strive to be and become tzaddikim - righteous ones, regardless of any error or mistake we might make. As you point out, there is always repentance, the capacity to return to God, and there is forgiveness in the Messiah the very instant we repent, returning to the Lord.

Now the years accounted in Genesis of Adam’s life fall short of 1000 by 70 years and this gave rise to the Midrash of Adam seeing the soul of King David arising in the future without length of life, and seeing the essential role David was to play in his generation, as well as for future generations and the eventual tikkune and salvation of the world. Thus, moved with compassion and the love of the Lord, wishing the ultimate fulfillment of the will of God, Adam offered 70 years of his own life to the soul of David, ensuring David’s existence.

First there is the offering of life by Adam, which hints at what the Messiah would do, and reflects the way of tzaddikim who labor to generate merit, not for themselves alone, but for future generations - all of their relations, a generation of life and light, and who engage in a full self-offering, serving the Lord throughout their lives, willing to do whatever is needed for the return of souls to God, or the enlightenment and liberation of souls.

As we know, David became King of Israel at a crucial time following the reign of King Saul, a very ill and demented ruler, and as well as a king David was accounted as a prophet of God and very zealous in his faith. Aside from this, however, remember, the Messiah - the Anointed of God, was destined to arise from the line of David, so that more than just ensuring David’s life, giving 70 years of life to David Adam ensured the coming of the Messiah - the salvation of humankind. This is what Adam saw with David and what motivated his compassionate self-offering, compassion for all the generations of humanity to come after him - the generations of Adam.

King David did commit a terrible twofold sin, orchestrating the death of one of his closest friends and taking his friend’s wife for himself, but understand that this did not eradicate all that David had accomplished in his life and spirituality, all of the good that David had done. The same is true for us. Remember, all of the good that we accomplish is enduring and last forever, and will not be taken from us, regardless of our errors; on the other hand, our errors, sins, do not endure and are not preserved forever, but as soon as we repent there is forgiveness, that, or as soon as the effects play themselves out and the energy of them is expended, they cease to exist, passing into nothingness. Remember, according to the Attributes of Mercy cited in the Torah, righteousness is held for a “thousand generations” - or incarnations, and wickedness for only three to four! Praise God (El), the Merciful One!

So yes, a dreadful error, sin, but that time of wickedness did not erase all of the righteousness of David, not in the least; and as you have said, David did repent of what he had done and he experienced its full effects, in the remainder of his life and in his passing from the body, but also there was the effects of all the good that he accomplished. Likewise, as we know, the Messiah did arise from the line of David, the Messiah has come, is coming and is to come, and David is redeemed and elevated because of this, praise God, our Savior!

If we error, if we fall into klippot, may we swiftly remember the Lord and repent, returning to God! Amen.

Shalom Aleichem!

Grace and peace to you in Hayyah Yeshua!

Concerning the 70 years of life Adam gave to the soul of King David, having shared essential, practical teachings about this, I’m inclined to share an esoteric teaching, a secret mystery, for those with understanding. It’s a teaching that is an evolution of one given by the Arizal.
.
In the Kabbalah of the Arizal, in his initial outer teaching of the interconnection of the Olamot (universes/worlds), he teaches that the Olamot are connected through Keter and Malkut, the Malkut of the upper, interior Olam being inseparable from the Keter of the lower, exterior Olam. Again and again, though, he speaks of the interconnection of the Olamot as “links in a chain,” and this inspires the inner teaching of the interconnection of the Olamot to form the Great Tree as taught in our lineage and tradition in which there is a deeper, more complex interconnection understood between them. These two visions and teachings of the interconnection of the Olamot, however, pose no contradiction, both express truths of the interconnection of the Olamot and Sefirot, and each reveals deep secret mysteries of the Tree of Life, of creation, the chariot and God.

Now, if we contemplate the teaching of the interconnection of the Olamot through Malkut and Keter, quite directly “Keter is in Malkut and Malkut is in Keter” as taught in the Kabbalah, not just in the sense that each Sefirah contains all ten, but because Keter and Malkut from one Olam to another are inseparable from one another. If we consider this interconnection between Adam Kadmon and Atzilut, understanding Atik Yomin (Ancient of Days) as the interface, there is something of a secret mystery revealed.

Listen and hear, and understand! As is known, Atik Yomin corresponds with the ten Sefirot within Keter of Keter of Atzilut, but as the interface of Adam Kadmon and Atzilut Atik Yomin also corresponds with the ten Sefirot of Malkut of Malkut of Adam Kadmon, so that in Atik Yomin Adam Kadmon and Atzilut merge, as it were, and are inseparable from one another. According to the Arizal, the years of Adam’s life - Supernal Adam (Adam Elyon, or Adam Ha-Rishon) correspond with the Sefirot of the Great Tree of Life, including the configurations of Sefirot that form the Partzufim (Divine Personifications). These years are counted from the “beginning of life” at the level of Malkut of Malkut of Asiyah reaching into Atzilut and Adam Kadmon in fruition, at the “end of life,” if such may be said of Supernal Adam. Thus, if the life of Adam is “shortened” by 70 years because those years were given to King David, these are “years,” “powers,” corresponding with the Realm of Yichud (Unity), Adam Kadmon and Atzilut. Specifically, according to the teaching, revelation, of the Arizal and great mekubalim after him, these 70 years emanate from the seven Sefirot of Construction of Atik Yomin; in that King David was the “chariot of Malkut,” so the seven Sefirot of Construction of Malkut of Malkut of Adam Kadmon, which are inseparable from the seven Sefirot of Construction of Keter of Keter of Atzilut. Thus, spiritually, the soul of King David destined to be the chariot of Malkut-Kingdom and destined to the crown, the anointing as King of Israel.

As is known, the soul of the Messiah is also drawn from Atik Yomin, as foreseen and revealed by the prophet Daniel, and so esoterically the Messiah “coming from the line of King David”; but understand, while the soul of King David is drawn from the seven Sefirot of Construction of Atik Yomin, the soul of the Messiah is drawn from the ten Sefirot of Atik Yomin, hence the fullness of the Ancient of Days including the Supernals. As such, the soul of the Messiah draws in an influx of Yesod-Da’at of Adam Kadmon, or Tiferet of Adam Kadmon according to some masters of the tradition; for the full configuration of the Sefirot of the Shekinah of Adam Kadmon, even the exterior of exteriors of that manifestation of the Holy Shekinah, implies a unification of Tiferet and Malkut of Adam Kadmon through Yesod of Adam Kadmon.

In this we may understand that the soul of King David was very lofty, as were those of Patriarchs and Matriarchs, and Moses, Miriam and Aaron, and Elijah, who were accounted as chariots of various Sefirot; though it must be said that the soul of the Messiah, Yeshua, was the most holy and lofty of all, “exalted above every head” - chariot of the Supernals! Praise the Lord of lords and King of Kings!

This teaching, of course, ventures into inmost secret mysteries, and is very wild and crazy wisdom, and as such it cannot be explained, save to one who has understanding already; the deeper implications and knowledge of the teaching can only come through the Holy Spirit, through direct experience in aliyat neshamah - mystical ascensions of the soul. Hints, though, as given here, can be shared, and so those incline, those called, can contemplate, and can pray and meditate, and seek a revelation from the Spirit of God, from heaven and the angels, and so acquire true knowledge and understanding of the hidden mystery.

There is nothing more to say, so let us merge the silence in us with Great Speaking Silence of the Holy One (Gadol Hashmal Ha-Kodesh Achad).

May this casting of a seed of light bear much fruit; may the Holy Name of the Infinite One be blessed! Amen.

Yeshua Shalom!

Grace and peace to you in Hayyah Yeshua, the Risen Messiah!

There is something more that can be shared concerning Adam gifting 70 years of life to David, and those 70 years corresponding with the seven Sefirot of Construction of Atik Yomin. Let us remember, according to the Holy Kabbalah, the essences of souls, or roots of souls, are drawn from the Sefirot of the Realm of Yichud (Unity), Adam Kadmon/Atzilut, all souls having their root in a Sefirah or configuration of Sefirot of Atzilut, whether interiors or exteriors; as is known, these Sefirot are often envisioned and discussed as the image, body of Supernal Adam (Adam Elyon, Adam Ha-Rishon) as for example we see in the teachings of Shiur Komah. Thus, the Holy Kabbalah teaches that all souls are contained in the body of Supernal Adam, and are drawn from the body and soul of Supernal Adam, understanding the body and soul of Supernal Adam as inseparable from one another, the “soul” pervading the body and yet surrounding the body.

Understanding this, while the movement of gifting 70 of life to David for the sake of the coming of the Messiah is a unique and distinct divine action, conveying specific secret mysteries, the life and light of all souls emanates from the body and soul of Supernal Adam - exterior and interiors of the Universe of the Sefirot, Atzilut.

As it known, Keter is the “skull,” and as the “crown” it also corresponds with the top of the head of Supernal Adam; Hokmah and Binah the two “halves of the brain” - and with Da’at the “Three Mochin.” Tiferet corresponds with the “torso”; Hesed and Gevurah the “arms and hands” - Right and Left; Netzach and Hod the “thighs and legs”; Yesod the “member”; and Malkut the “feet.” Thus, in a manner of speaking, souls are drawn from various parts of the body of Supernal Adam, including internal parts, “organs,” as well as various other features representing more measured attributes such as “eyes,” “nostrils,” “hair,” “beard,” “fingers,” “toes,” “heels,” as well as “front” and “back,” and so on. This corresponds with the generation of countless gradations of souls, from very lofty grades to greater and lesser gradations, those drawn from the “top of the head” or “skull,” and from the “brain,” representing very lofty souls - the supernal holy and enlightened ones.

Contemplating the secret mystery of Adam giving 70 years of life to David there is also this supreme mystery of all souls being drawn from the body of Supernal Adam to consider, and considering it perhaps you will understand how Supernal Adam “sees” the soul of David and its potential fates and destinies, and how it may be that “Supernal Adam saw from the beginning to the end of creation”; Supernal Adam beheld and knew all of this within him/herself in the Light Continuum, the eternal realm (Yichud).

If and when a soul awakens and becomes fully realized, entering into full Divine Consciousness - Supernal, Primordial, so this becomes their vision, their Habad, as we see with Adonai Yeshua, the Messiah, and the Holy Bride.

May we be blessed to glimpse something of the Great Vision of Adam Elyon and so be aware of the true desire of our holy neshamah so that we might fulfill it, and so fulfill Ratzon Elyon - the Will of the Supreme! Amen.

Yahweh Shalom!

Shalom Tau Malachi,

Thank you for your response to the original question, and for taking it much further than I ever imagined!

From what you said of Supernal Adam, where all souls are held and emanated. There was an envisioning of the hand of Supernal Adam reaching, not reaching, until there was reaching in the form of the soul of David. I know we speak of reaching, not reaching, until there was reaching, in terms of Sefirot, and I also wondered if it could be applied here? If we can contemplate the movement in this way, can we also say the same for the soul of the Messiah emanating? And when the soul of Messiah emanates, does it emanate from supernal Adam, or the soul of David, or both? Since all souls are held in Supernal Adam, and yet, if David had never existed, the Messiah would have never existed either; so they are intrinsically linked.

I was also wondering about this emanation of souls: Is it, regarding all souls residing is various parts of the body of Supernal Adam, that that particular part of the body is not manifest until that soul emanates into the world, becoming realized in this world? That is, that particular part of Supernal Adam is latent, until the soul becomes realized? And could we say that part of God lies latent as well?

You have said:
“Thus, if the life of Adam is “shortened” by 70 years because those years were given to King David, these are “years,” “powers,” corresponding with the Realm of Yichud (Unity), Adam Kadmon and Atzilut…these 70 years emanate from the seven Sefirot of Construction of Atik Yomin;…”

So did Adam give up the part of his soul—the 70 years corresponding to Yichud? Perhaps we cannot say "give up" since, as you have said, when a soul is emanated it stays within Adam, while yet appearing in this world? I was visualizing this in terms of the image of a pyramid, where the lower blocks hold up the upper blocks. Is Adam acting as a lower block here, upholding the soul of David, who, in turn, holds up the soul of the Messiah?

Praise Be the Mother Spirit who bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, and endures all things.

Grace and peace to you in Hayyah Yeshua!

Whenever anthropomorphic metaphors and terms are used in Scripture and the Holy Kabbalah, as we contemplate the secret mysteries they convey, it is crucial that we do not take them literally, but rather as symbolic and metaphorical, as hints of secret wisdom that cannot be spoken, but only alluded to for those with understanding who might acquire insights through hints. This is certainly true of the mysteries spoken of Adam Kadmon, and Adam Elyon, and Adam Ha-Rishon, and Adam and Havvah (Eve) in the Garden of Eden; these various terms are meant to indicate various levels and aspects of the Human One - human souls, and their intersection and inseparability from the Divine Attributes, Sefirot. While speaking of the Human One - souls of spiritual humanity (Israel), so also these terms and everything taught in connection with them reveal mysteries of the World of the Sefirot - Atzilut, and it’s interiors reaching into the Primordial and Infinite One (Ain Sof).

Perhaps you may recall a teaching concerning Adam Kadmon - the Primordial Human, which states, on one hand, that Adam Kadmon is asleep and dreaming, and is in the process of awakening. In that all human souls are drawn from Adam Kadmon - their divine sparks or unique essences (yechidah) having their root in Adam Kadmon, so we are Adam Kadmon in the process of awakening, and as souls are awakened, enlightened and liberated - reintegrated with the Simple Primordial Light, the Clear Light Essence, so Adam Kadmon is awakening. On the other Hand, though, and integral to this, the same body of teachings also states the Adam Kadmon has never slept, never dreamt, but abides awake; hence, Adam Kadmon called the “One-Who-Never-Sleeps,” and also the “Bornless One.” This, of course, hints at primordial enlightenment, the truth of souls in the gilgulim, transmigration, becoming realized, enlightened, and the truth of the enlightened nature - primordial enlightenment, within and behind all the while, this being how the enlightenment and liberation of souls is possible - because its their primordial and supernal nature and essence. This, too, speaks to the reality or perspective of souls in the eternal realm (Yichud), timeless-eternity, and the reality or perspective of souls in space-time (Perud), time-eternity.

Here we may recall what Holy Tzaddikim have said concerning supernal realization and primordial enlightenment, that the experience is as though one of “remembering,” as though this realization, enlightenment, always was, is and forever shall be; hence the truth of oneness with Yahweh, the Eternal One, as was embodied in Messiah Yeshua and the Magdalene. Praise God!

Understand, something of this very same mystery plays out through Adam Elyon, Adam Ha-Rishon and Adam and Havvah in the Garden of Eden, these various designations indicating a reaching from the Olam Ha-Adam Kadmon into various gradations of Olam Ha-Atzilut, or from the primordial universe to the supernal universe, Adam Elyon representing the inmost level of Olam Ha-Atzilut, the threshold of the primordial and supernal, and Adam and Havvah the outermost, corresponding with the Seven Sefirot of Construction of Atzilut - the Six and Malkut, respectively.

Here, in the context of the giving of light and life to the soul of King David, this corresponds with a secret mystery of Adam Elyon - Supernal Adam inseparable from Adam Kadmon, and yet all in a great and supreme mystery, distinct from Adam Kadmon, and conveying specific mysteries of the souls of humanity and the Sefirot that are different from those of Adam Kadmon. As perhaps you might imagine, Adam Elyon corresponds with mysteries of hayyah, our light-power, or life-power, our living essence; hence, the “giving of life and light” from Supernal Adam to David.

It is given that we can speak a secret mystery concerning this, as far as the Holy Spirit allows in the moment, as far as God wills it and we may be gifted with understanding to comprehend the mystery. Remembering what has been said concerning Adam Kadmon awake and yet asleep and dreaming, so also something similar with Supernal Adam, Adam Elyon, Adam Ha-Rishon; in truth the light and life of Supernal Adam cannot be reduced or diminished, and yet, all in a great and supreme mystery giving light and life there is a reduction, or rather a restriction and concealment.

Listen and hear, and understand! If you consider it the reduction of years is not spoken of with Adam Elyon, Adam Ha-Rishon in the Holy Torah, but rather with Adam and Havvah; it is after the division of Male and Female, and following the movement out of the Garden of Eden. This is significant, for the giving of light and life from Supernal Adam transpires through Adam and Havvah; hence, there is an issuance from the Supernals, and interiors of Atzilut, which is then conveyed through the Middot, the Seven Sefirot of Construction of Atzilut - these conveying through restriction and concealment (tzimtzum) an issuance of the Seven Sefirot of Construction of Atik Yomin - the “70 years.”

This is a most subtle and sublime mystery - secret wisdom corresponding with inmost grades of Light Transmission and Mochin Gadlut (God Consciousness), but for those inclined, let them contemplate this well, and understand with God’s help!

Now, as we contemplate these various aspects or dimensions of Adam - the Human One, primordial and supernal, they relate to mysteries of the inner aspects of souls, yechidah, hayyah and neshamah, and convey how, on the inmost level, all souls abide in oneness - the Holy One, completely interdependent, interconnected, interrelated and interpenetrating one another, and yet how each is, nevertheless, unique and individual. As souls awaken and become realized, enlightened, experiencing Mochin Gadlut, they may enter into something of the Habad of Supernal Adam, experiencing the vision of the Universe, or Great Cosmic Cycle, from beginning to end, and having deep insight into souls and the gilgulim, including tikkunim of souls, and fates and destinies of souls, and the play of greater and lesser spiritual forces, divine, archonic and demonic; hence, intimate knowledge of the Works of Creation, the Chariot and Salvation - the threefold Great Work in the Spirit of God.

Here it is given to me to pause, and abide, waiting upon the Holy Spirit.

May we be blessed with knowledge of the Human One of Light, within us and beyond us, and embody the spiritual power of the savior ordained for us from the beginning (Reshit)! Amen.

Shalom Aleichem!
