Purity in Prayer (Exodus 3:5)

Purity In Prayer

“Come no closer! Remove the sandals from your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground” (Exodus 3:5).

When you turn to God in prayer as long as there remains you and God, ‘other than’ God, though perhaps able to draw near and converse with God through the veil of yourself, your soul will not be able to enter into the experience of oneness, your soul will only be able to draw so close, and then “no closer.” To draw closer and to enter into the experience of oneness with the Divine Presence you, your ego, and everything other than God, must be removed, must ‘pass away’, for oneness means that there is only God, there is no ‘other.’

When Moshe was first called out by Yahweh through the Divine Presence in the burning bush, as yet he did not know how to pray in the way of the knowers of God, the prophets, apostles and true tzaddikim; he did not know the station of passing away, and so in uplifting him to the station of Prophethood, an inmost station among knowers of God, Yahweh sought to teach Moses to enter the station Passing Away and how to pray as a knower of God and a true Prophet of God.

“Remove the sandals from your feet, for the place you are standing is holy ground,” sandals is the world and worldly self, the ego, and ego-grasping at name and form and personal history, which is the great barrier, or great veil, to the realization of the Oneness that God Is; thus, for the most intimate converse with the Holy One a soul must be cleansed, purified, of this - there must be a passing away.

As we know, Moshe, may God bless him and give him peace, struggled with this in his first prophetic experience, so much so that the Divine Presence shifted into severity or judgment, and afterward when Moshe was on his way to Egypt we read, “…Yahweh met him and sought to kill him” (4:24). On an esoteric level we may understand this as a further teaching, or lesson of passing away, preparing Moshe for the realization of higher, inmost stations and the full realization of prophethood through the grace and mercy of God.

It is only natural that Moshe struggled with this at the outset of his prophetic call, for never before had he experienced such lofty ascents of the soul or direct unveilings and self-disclosures of God Most High, and likewise, the same will be true of anyone who is set upon the Straight Path and who experiences the inner grades of Light Transmission; they will also struggle to completely turn away from everything other than God as they turn to God in prayer, they will need to learn how to pass away in prayer, meditation and worship. Thus there is a striving in the Straight Path for full self-purification, or self-negation, as the initiate turns to God in prayer.

Understand, when knowers of God who have the station of Truth pray they pray in the secret of: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (John 1:1). Contemplate this well!

When you turn to God in prayer, seek to completely lose yourself in prayer, seek to be empty of yourself so that the Spirit of God might fill you and take up your prayer, and so that you might pray to God through God, not through other than God, or when you pray, let God be the seeing, hearing and speaking, and let your body, heart and mind be as the body, heart and mind of God, passing away in the Spirit of God. In this way there may be greater unveilings and self-disclosures of God in your heart and soul, the profound witnessing of God, knowledge of God, dawning in your heart and soul.

We may note that after some time, though Moshe struggled mightily in his initial encounter with the direct unveiling of the Divine Presence, and also in another encounter with the Lord following it, though initially he hid his face from the Lord, afraid to look upon the Divine Presence in the burning bush, he eventually became well acquainted, and having been blessed to gaze deep into the Divine Presence was able to gaze upon the outer glories of the face, or the ‘Small Face,’ and even desired and invoked seeing the inner glories of the face of Yahweh, or a glimpse of the ‘Big Face.’ Thus, once established in the station of passing away he continued to progress from inmost station to inmost station until his boundary, the station of the Messiah, which was not given to him.

There is certainly more that might be said of these secret mysteries, but this seems a good beginning for contemplation.

May we be blessed to realize the station of Passing Away in this very life and bring pure glorification to God Most High! Amen.

Shalom Aleichem!
