Vision of the Second Coming (Matthew 16:27-28)

Vision of the Second Coming

“For the Son of Man is to come with his angels in the glory of the Father, and he will repay everyone for what has been done. Truly I tell you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom” (Matthew 16:27-28).

This is a prophecy of the return of the Lord, the Second Coming of Messiah, and on the surface it may seem as though this prophecy remains unfulfilled, for clearly of the end of days for the world and return of the Lord as immediate event in the near future, in the lifetime of those who were listening, did not happen. Given that thousands of years have passed and the end of days for the world has yet to transpire so this may seem unfulfilled. On this surface level this, of course, speaks to the complete humanity of Yeshua Messiah, like all of the prophets and apostles of God Most High. Seeing, hearing and feeling with God in the eternal realm, the Light Continuum, experiencing revelations of secrets of creation and God, and beholding things that are going to come to pass according to the foreknowledge of God, on a mortal, human level it can be difficult to discern the actual timing of such events, or exactly when they will come to pass. In the experience of prophecy and revelation, in aliyat neshamah - ‘mystical ascents of the soul,’ touching into the eternal realm, the Light Continuum, there is no past, present and future, but everything is a present reality, and as such is an immediate experience to the prophet or apostle. Something that will happen in the very near future or something that will happen in a very distant future are seen, heard and felt with the same clarity and immediacy. Therefore a prophet or apostle may speak of events that will transpire in a distant future at times as though they are near at hand and soon to transpire.

This speaks deeply to experiences of aliyat neshamah and the Light Continuum, and experiences of intimate nearness and union with the Eternal One (Yahweh), and of the knowledge of God that arises - the ‘knowing in God.’

If we contemplate this passage on a deeper level, however, having direct experience of the Divine Presence and Light Continuum, we will know and understand that this prophecy was fulfilled, and continues to be fulfill among mystics and gnostics in the Messiah, for among us are those who have experienced revelations of the Risen and Ascended Messiah, and who have beheld in experiences of aliyat neshamah, or in dreams and visions, the coming of the Messiah with his angels in ‘clouds of glory’ - or ‘clouds of witnesses.’ Indeed, consider Yohanan the Beloved (St. John) who beheld the vision of the end of days and the vision of the return of the Messiah while he was in exile on the Isle of Patmos, which he recorded in the Book of Revelation. In him, as well as others, such as the Magdalene, this prophecy was in fact fulfilled, and it continues to be fulfilled in the experience and realization of those who bring the Straight Path to its fruition and so taste, glimpse, and eventually reach, intimate nearness and oneness with God, the True Light. In this regard this prophecy is a promise to us that if we cleave to the Messiah in faith and love we may experience a direct revelation of the Risen and Ascended Messiah, and more so, we may experience Messianic Consciousness - God Consciousness, and so have knowledge of God (True Gnosis).

As we know Adonai Yeshua taught his disciples to invoke and pray, and to ask God for whatever they needed and desired, spiritual and material. St. James teaching the same tells us that if we ask in the fullness of faith, free from doubt and disbelief, whatever we ask will be given to us, and I would add that it will be given to us in abundance, more than we had imagined. Understanding that it is possible to see the coming of the Risen and Ascended Messiah with his angels in glory, ‘in his kingdom,’ whether with the eye of the heart, the eye of the mind or eye of the soul, or whether in luminous dream or a vision, if any faithful and spiritual Christian wishes to ‘see’ the Son of Man in full glory, let them cleave with their entire being, heart and soul, mind and body, to Yeshua Messiah and let them invoke with conscious intention and passionate yearning, and let them pray and pray and pray, and meditate deep, asking for this knowledge of the Messiah and God Most High. Yet more, tending a continuum of prayer and meditation in this way, venturing into the depths of prayer, let them go out on spiritual retreat, seeking a vision from God. Let this be done in the fullness of faith, hope and love, free from doubt and disbelieve, trusting in the Lord to answers prayers.

If anyone goes out seeking such a vision, though, they must be willing to be overwhelmed by the Spirit of God, and willing to pass away and be carried in ascent by the Spirit; and going out, they ought to go out with the Lord in oneness, not in twoness, as taught in the Straight Path - go out in fullness and not lack, for a person who is ‘lacking’ in faith can expect to receive nothing from the Holy One.

In movements of the Holy Spirit like this there is a play of ‘season,’ and therefore it may be that an aspirant may need to tend a continuum of prayer and invocation for some time before they are truly prepared for the ‘coming of the Lord.’ Perhaps some weeks on months, or even some years. Likewise it may be that they are put to the test, but they must not turn aside, they must not turn to the right or the left, and must not turn back, but must continue to go straight to God, and God alone, laboring to overcome any barrier they might encounter, seeking to abide open and sensitive to the Spirit of God. Invocations and prayers such as these reaching into higher and lofty stations and states are answered in ‘due season,’ as God wills, when a soul is ready and willing to receive.

Quite naturally, seeking such a vision and knowledge of God we need to fashion ourselves as a ‘fit vessel’ for the reception of the corresponding influx of the Holy Light and Spirit, seeking such an intimate exchanges in nearness, oneness, we need to generate in us a likeness to the image of the Messiah in the Holy One. Thus this invocation and prayer asking for revelation - the ‘coming of the Lord,’ is active and dynamic, including the cultivation of the qualities of the Messiah and Holy One - the Divine Attributes. In this regard let us remember the teaching of the Gospel of Phillip, that ‘no one sees anything in the spiritual realm unless they become similar to it.’

In closing I can also remind that there are very powerful practices of mystical prayer/meditation taught in our tradition called ‘Union with Partzuf’ (divine personification) that can open an initiate’s heart and mind to such visions, revelations. Taking up a union with partzuf with the ‘Son of Man’ or ‘Risen Messiah’ can be a way to invoke this vision of the ‘coming of the Lord,’ certainly so!

These are a few insights I was inclined to share on these two verses following our discourse inspired by them last Shabbat.

May you be ready for the coming of the Lord, and receiving the Lord may you be received by the Lord and gathered into the Supernal One! Amen.

Yeshua Shalom!

This is an exciting insight and teaching of how the prophecy of the Second Coming is being constantly fulfilled as our realisation of God's presence grows. I have seen it spoken before about how while the First Coming was the time of the Son being the herald of the Father, the Second will be the Daughter as herald of God the Mother, thus restoring the balance of God Most High and reflected in humanity. However instead of looking to the horizon for an external saviour who will appear to rescue us, as many seem to believe, we need to instead look within. To not wait for another to act for us but to awaken the Christ consciousness within, for that is where the Daughter needs to be awakened. The teachings of this forum are helping me greatly to visualise my own union with Godself.

I also find it interesting when you speak of the Holy Spirit and the 'seasons', I can't help but think of Earth Mother and her literal seasons being a continuous cycle that mirrors our spiritual growth in its stages. It is interesting how we speak of the Straight Path, when it just as much a cycle - we go back to what we thought before and look at those things with different, more learned and experienced eyes, with a new understanding, rather than simply moving on in a direct line. As a metaphorical example to link with the seasons of earth; last Winter here we had a terrible snow storm that is rather unusual in my country but had me trapped inside my house for a day until the snow as cleared - next season I will be prepared with a new shovel in case it happens again! The cycle of seasons remains the same, but our experience them does not have to.

May the Daughter of Woman be awakened and received in fullness. May all be received by the Lady Most High.

Grace and peace to you from El Elyon, the Supernal One!

If we consider the prophets and apostles, and we consider their luminous dreams and visions, the manifestation of prophecy and revelation - ‘visions,’ is always a call to action, a setting into motion, and with a prophecy or revelation there is divine authority and power given to the prophet or apostle, that they in turn are to direct to situations into which they are sent and share with the people to whom they are sent. In this regard receiving the word of the Eternal One (Yahweh), or having a luminous dream or vision, while perhaps the culmination of invocations and prayers seeking an illumination or vision, is not an end, but is the beginning of a new spiritual movement for the prophet or apostle, and for the people and the land in which they live. Necessarily, receiving a word or vision of the Eternal One, or the Risen and Ascended Messiah, transforms the consciousness of the individual receiving it, and there needs to be a surrender to that transformation, a ‘passing away’ as the soul, the consciousness, is uplifted and expands into the One.

In effect a prophet or apostle is to ‘wear the body of vision’ they have received, becoming as it were the body of vision - or talisman of the word and wisdom, and they are conduits of the corresponding influx of spiritual power, the power of the Holy Shekinah, Holy Spirit with them.

Something of this remains true for a mystic or gnostic who experiences an illumination or vision of the Risen and Ascended Messiah, or the ‘coming of the Lord in his kingdom,’ even though they may not be called to serve as a prophet or apostle in Anointed Community; they need to allow their mind, heart and life be transformed, and live according to the Truth and Light revealed, seeking to embody what they have seen, heard and felt of the Divine Presence, and quite naturally the blessing and empowerment they have received - the influx of the Holy Light and Spirit, will ray out in the Anointed Community. In truth, even if we are seeking a vision for personal direction from the Spirit of God in our lives during a time of transition, we do not seek such things for ourselves alone, but for the sake of others as well and for our spiritual community; even if for the sake of personal direction from the Holy One it is also for the sake of people in our lives and how we might be of greater benefit or service to them in the love and compassion of Messiah.

Indeed, for though all of us are not called to stand as a prophet or apostles in Anointed Community, receiving the Messiah - our anointing with the Holy Light and Spirit of God, we are all ordained in a royal priesthood and we receive the very same Spirit that is the foundation of the prophetic and apostolic succession, and we are all called as messengers of the Gospel in the Spirit; hence we are called as light-bearers, healers and peacemakers. Seeking a vision we are seeking a greater empowerment in this spiritual labor, empowerment for greater spiritual works in the harvest of souls.

Now there is something of an open secret that we may share concerning visions of the Risen and Ascended Messiah, and more so visions of the ‘coming of the Lord’ - the Second Coming. Understand, in the Messiah, and more so in the experience of Messianic Consciousness - Supernal Consciousness, when visions arise, as much as they appear before and surrounding the seer, so what is beheld is within them; in the inmost grades of divine vision and revelation the apparent outer space and inner space are experienced as inseparable from one another - there is one spacious radiant awareness in conscious union with the Holy One of Being. God is the seeing, hearing and feeling, and all that appears is contained within God, the True Light. This is especially the case in visions of the ‘coming of the Lord,’ or the Second Coming, because the Second Coming transpires with, in and through us, and as us - the Body of Messiah, Anointed Community.

What is ‘seen’ is the Messiah indwelling and surrounding on all sides - arising from deep within and rushing, as it were, from all directions of endless space, ‘ascending and descending, going out and coming in, moving and moving not’ - a Continuum of Light ‘With-Out-End.’ It is the knowledge of ‘That-Which Was, Is and forever Shall Be’ (Yahweh) in conscious union; hence the reality of the Blessed Name Yeshua.

If, indeed, there is a true vision of the ‘coming of the Lord’ in oneness, not twoness, then it will be a glimpse, taste, of Messianic Consciousness - Supernal Consciousness, but if there is a reaching of the corresponding station of the soul and abiding, then it would be a breakthrough into Supernal Consciousness, self-realization in the Supernal One (Eheieh). Thus, truly, in an experience of actual reaching the corresponding station a soul is taken up in ‘divine rapture’ and the soul, the elements of consciousness, arise in pure emanation - innate oneness, primordial purity.

Whether this arises as a state - a passing glimpse or taste, or as a station - an abiding experience, it is a wonderful blessing and gift from the Holy Spirit, for it gives intimate knowledge of the Messiah and Holy One.

In speaking about vision, or prophecy and revelation of any grade, however, it must be said that self-purification is essential, purification from self-cherishing, desire and fear, for most often a ‘testing’ or ‘temptation’ is part of the experience of divine vision, whether before, during or after. This is reflected in the gospels where Adonai Yeshua’s spiritual retreat seeking a vision of his mission after his full reception of the Holy Spirit is called ‘the temptation’ and we are told of his testing by Satan followed by his being ‘waited upon’ by angels of heaven and God, the True Light. The very nature of such ‘tests’ or ‘temptations’ arise from impurities in consciousness that come from the ignorance, the illusion of separation, and the play of self-cherishing, desire and fear in it.

Quite naturally, the greater the purification of the soul, the consciousness, the greater the grade of vision, or prophecy and revelation; hence, the movement into seeing in the ‘clear mirror of prophecy,’ and perhaps through grace the experience of God being the seeing, hearing and feeling - direct knowledge of God in the Messiah.

The ultimate power of purification, though, is in the Holy Blood of the Lamb of God and Holy Spirit, so that while we co-labor with the Holy Spirit for self-purification, seeking to break out of ourselves, it is the Holy Spirit that brings perfect purification to those who cleave to Messiah Yeshua in full faith and love; hence, the spiritual power of forgiveness in the Messiah.

These were a few more thoughts I was inclined to share.

Shalom Aleichem!
