The Light of All (Gospel of Phillip, Verse 104)

#1 Postby Marion » Tue Sep 03, 2019 2:54 am

Shalom!

“As soon as Christ went down into the water he came out laughing at everything in this world, not because he thought it a trifle, but out of contempt. Whoever wants to enter the kingdom of heaven will do so. Whoever despises everything of this world, scorns it as a trifle, will emerge laughing. So with the bread, wine and oil, for above is One superior to all of these.”— Gospel of Phillip, verse 104 http://gnosis.org/naghamm/gop.html

We talked about this verse in chat a few weeks ago and this morning I came across something extraordinary while contemplating it. In Greek, the word: ἐξουθενέω—exoutheneó "contempt" actually means something closer to: "to bring to naught, reduce to nothing". This reminds me of our teachings of Ain—No-thingness. It is as if Yeshua is laughing because he realizes the inmost nature of reality is no-thingness; he sees the world for what it is.

This gets at the extraordinariness of Malkut. Somehow, Malkut has no light of her own, is the most removed, and concealed aspect of God, and somehow is everything that brings us closer to God, if only we have eyes to see it. Another way I am seeing this is realizing that things in this world do not exist apart from God. They do not have any meaning or power apart from God. With God, and in God, things of this world are immensely powerful.

Does this verse suggest that when Yeshua came up out of the waters that he had a very different view? I get a sense that when he came up from the waters, his eyes were opened to the Supernal light realm within and behind all that appears?

In this light, (no pun intended!) can we see this as a teaching and practice for ourselves to be aware of the light realm within and behind this world? To be open to miracles, to see this as a magical universe where anything can happen? This view tends to bolster hope because with it, we can see the suffering and the plight of beings here and know that it all has a purpose. The purpose isn’t to “get out of here” but to get really deeply in here. So deep in fact, that light and darkness, beauty and horror merge.

May we be empowered to merge, as Yeshua merged with the all in all, Amen!

Shalom Aleichem!

Grace and peace to you from Hayyah Yeshua, the Risen and Ascended Messiah!

As this passage affirms Yeshua came into being as the Messiah in his baptism with Yohanan, not at the time of his birth; it was there in the Sacred Jordan that the Holy Spirit was fully embodied in him, the Pleroma of Light becoming manifest as him - fullness of the Light-presence and Light-power of the Infinite and Eternal One.

On the surface this passage might seem very dualistic, typical of many schools of classical ‘gnosticism,’ but to initiates, in fact, it points to a state of pure radiant awareness in conscious union with the Eternal One (Yahweh). It is in such a state that a person is able to perceive the true kingdom of God - Pleroma of Light - within them and surrounding them on all sides, and so. ‘enter,’ experience, the kingdom of heaven in this life, and in the afterlife. If and when this state of supernal consciousness arises - Messianic Consciousness - this world, unenlightened society, does indeed appear as a ‘trifle,’ as nothing, unreal, and quite naturally there is ‘contempt’ for it - distain for the grievous ignorance and injustice, the ugliness of greed and lust for power that creates social, economic and environmental injustice that corrupts and destroys life, and ruins the beautiful creation the Holy One has made. Seeing this, seeing the bondage of souls to the ignorance, darkness, and feeling the immeasurable sorrow and suffering it generates, can only provoke righteous outrage and contempt, and yes a certain laughter along with a weeping in this vision of sorrow. Bluntly put, the way of the unenlightened society is a ridiculous and sorry affair, and the thought that through some sort of political revolution it will change, apart from a radical change in the collective consciousness of humankind, is a joke, is silly, for whatever the ‘revolutions’ in the unenlightened condition, more of the same old ignorance swiftly follows!

As long as we are self-identified with name, form, and personal history - bound up in ego-grasping, and go in the way of unenlightened society, seeking our self-esteem, and our “success and happiness,” according to its values, we cannot enter, experience, the kingdom of heaven, or the experience of the enlightenment and liberation of the soul.

Understand, here in this passage ‘world’ does not mean nature and creation - this Good Earth, but rather human society, unenlightened society, and the ignorance, darkness, that dominates it. It is this that is contemptible, certainly so! God help us in these ignorant, dark times! Amen.

Rather than seeking a revolution in the ignorance people would be wise to seek direct revelation of God - knowledge of God through nearness and oneness with God; hence, spiritual and supernal realization, enlightenment.

As we know, we live and move and have our being in the Holy One, and have never been separate or apart from the Holy One; but in the ignorance, the illusion of separation, we are deceived, we forget our origin in the Supernal One and the Infinite Light of the One. The very purpose of the coming of the Messiah, and indeed all true messengers of God, is to awaken us and remind us of our innate union with the Holy One so that recognizing and realizing it we might abide in conscious union.

Understand, if indeed we wish to realize our innate unity with the Holy One, then we must, in effect, turn away from creatures and creation, and seek the Holy One and the Holy One alone; in the realization of oneness with the Holy One, so in effect we and all creation pass away in that Absolute Oneness of the Most High, and truly we become aware that the only reality is the Holy One, there is only the Holy One, the Infinite and Eternal, there is no ‘other.’

Now here something very intriguing is said, that even such ‘sacred’ things as the bread and wine and oil, or ceremonies of the eucharist and anointing, in and of themselves are as nothing, a trifle! This speaks to religion as it manifests in ignorance, in the unenlightened society, and the play of the ‘blind leading the blind,’ as is so common with the “religious authorities” of worldly, socio-political power structures. All ‘religion’ that teaches manmade doctrines in place of a spirituality of direct experience and knowledge of God, and that teaches prayer, meditation and worship in twoness, in the illusion of separation, is a trifle and worthy of contempt - it perpetuates the continued bondage of souls to the ignorance, the illusion of separation, and the potentially endless cycles of transmigration.

Truly, the bread, wine and oil are nothing, save when celebrated in the awareness of oneness, and with the play of Light Transmission - the Spirit of God; and so with all devotions, prayers, meditations and worship, apart from the awareness of oneness and the movement of the Spirit, they are nothing, and may even become barriers preventing the enlightenment and liberation of the soul.

In this regard we may consider the plight of fundamentalism that stretches across the spectrum of religions and the great and terrible evil that is wrought by many “faithful” in the ignorance; but then we may consider the mystics and gnostics that arises from the various branches of faith and wisdom - true religion that seeks and attains actual knowledge of God through oneness with God, enlightenment.

These are a few thoughts that arose as I contemplate this passage at this time and so I was inclined to share them.

May we be blessed to experience and realize the Absolute Oneness of God Most High and so be set free by the Truth! Amen.

Blessings in the Holy Light of the Messiah, the light of all true prophets and apostles!

There is something more I’m inclined to add, a clarification of sorts.

At the outset it is said that Yeshua laughed at the world, ‘not because he thought it was a trifle, but out of contempt.’ Then, later, the passage goes on to encourage the listener to ‘scorn the world as a trifle.’ This, of course, seems to be somewhat of a contradiction, but we must remember that many passages in this gospel are thought to be brief notes for sermons, something like highlights of a larger message that would be expanded upon. When it says that Yeshua did not laugh because he thought the world was a trifle, but out of contempt, this alludes to a laughter in compassion that did not dismiss the plight of souls in bondage to the ignorance, and their great sorrow and suffering, but had contempt for the ignorance, the injustice, the evildoing - the cause of the sorrow and suffering.

Thus, the passage teaches that we are not to despise souls bound up in the ignorance, or driven by the currents of spiritual forces of the Other Side, nor are we to dismiss their suffering, but we are to have love and compassion for them, and forgiveness, having contempt for the ignorance, the darkness, and the spiritual forces of the ignorance, the darkness - the ‘Other Side.’ In this regard we might recall the words of Adonai Yeshua on the cross, ‘Father forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.’

St. Paul spoke to this very well in his Letter to the Ephesians: “For our struggle is not against enemies of blood and flesh, but against rulers [archons], against the authorities, against cosmic powers of this present darkness, against spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly [celestial] places” (6:12).

It is this we are right to hold in contempt, and certainly the injustice, the wickedness, the evil, that comes from this ignorance, this darkness.

Concerning the admonition to ‘scorn the world as a trifle,’ we may recall the wisdom of Solomon in Ecclesiastes, that everything ‘under the sun is vanity,’ and that the only true purpose and value of life is to seek and acquire ‘wisdom’ - the enlightenment and liberation of the soul. This exactly is the teaching here.

Now, the addition of bread, wine and oil to the list of trifles came, no doubt, in response, and rebuke, to the emerging orthodoxy in the Christian faith that would give rise to Catholicism and various Orthodox sects that created a false priestcraft and celebration of the “Mass” with all manner of vain worldly splendors and pageantry, subjugating congregations of believers to a hierarchy of religious “authority” effectively dividing the Body of Christ - the faithful believers, from Christ and God. A trifle, indeed, God help us! For what they created in the Holy Name of the Lord was exactly what Yeshua rebuked in the temple and with the religious authorities of his time as he labored to restore a spirituality of direct experience of God - an inward communion with God each individual could celebrate, one not dependent upon a priestcraft or anything external. In fact, this was the very purpose of the feast of bread and wine Yeshua instituted in remembrance of him - the Messiah, not only embodied in himself, but in all who believe and who receive the anointing with the Holy Light and Spirit. The true anointing is with the Holy Light and Spirit, not oil, and the celebration of the feast of bread and wine is for the sake of remembrance of that anointing - Messiah; hence, it is a ‘wedding feast,’ as we would say, celebrating our innate union with the Messiah in God Most High (El Elyon - the Absolute Light).

Understanding this, the “Mass” as celebrated in orthodoxy is a trifle, and we may say a complete corruption of the original intention of the holy feast. I must say that in the Divine Presence, Holy Shekinah, Holy Spirit, I hold that corruption in contempt, just as it appears the author of this passage did.

These were a few further points I was inclined to share.

May the remembrance of the Straight Path of direct communion with God be remembered in our times and may many be set upon it by the Spirit of God! Amen.

Shalom Aleichem!

Life and Light Beyond Contempt

#4 Postby Elder Gideon » Wed Sep 11, 2019 5:13 pm

Thank you for this commentary on this verse, Tau. It touches something of the contempt I felt as a young man at odds with the religion built around their historical Jesus. Only when the Cosmic Christ opened my heart could I disaggregate the truth from my contempt with Christian religion.

This teaching is bringing to mind how I’ve heard you speak of Lady Mary as the holiness of anything we take up in prayer and ceremony our lineage. This mystified and intrigued me. Over the years, I feel a growing connection with this wisdom. By Lady Mary, we’re not only speaking of the co-Divine, co-equal embodiment of Christ the Sophia, but she personifies this direct revelation of the Holy One in every generation. As Mother of the Apostolic Succession, it is her personification of the Holy Shekinah—the Bride of the Lamb—who preserved what was and is holy of anything in the name of Yeshua Messiah. Again, this appeals not only to her role in the historical past, but to the Living Presence, the power of God that reveals the mystery through direct experience. The holiness is one’s embodiment of Messiah in their offering of bread, wine, and oil to another.

While we can address Yeshua’s words, actions, and life in distinction from everything contemptible of Christian religion, as many well-meaning Christians attempt today, the presence of the Bride in our Gnostic Gospel balances and neutralizes this contempt most directly. Embracing her role in the original community and example to us today, at least for me, responds to my contempt and replaces any idle critiques with her call: to go deeper behind what’s wrong with Christian religion and into what’s so right about gnosis. In two words, the Straight Path.

Praise the Most High for the life and light of the gospel: our embodiment of Messiah.

Gratefully,

Elder Gideon

Grace and peace to you in Hayyah Yeshua, the Risen and Ascended One!

Yes, indeed, my brother, once the klippot, husk, of manmade religion is recognized there is no need to fixate upon it, but rather to seek and find ‘true religion,’ the original intention and revelation; hence, the mystical path, a spirituality of direct experience through which gnosis, knowledge of God, is acquired. Thus, we labor to realize a conscious union with Messiah in the Supernal One who is ‘above’ all, and in this we may come to ‘rule over the entirety,’ as taught in the gnostic gospels.

Now, just as the Messiah is not isolate to Adonai Yeshua, though fully embodied in him, so the Shekinah of Messiah - Holy Bride, is not isolate to Mirya, but rather is manifest as Anointed Community, the ‘Body of Messiah,’ and ‘Bride of Messiah,’ according to the scriptures. In this regard we may consider the third point of refuge of the inner sanctuary within the threefold sanctuary - the Holy Bride, Shekinah, which is the inner dimension of Anointed Community.

As we know, the Holy Bride, Holy Shekinah - Magdalene, corresponds with the manifestation of the presence and power of Messiah on earth and in heaven in the First Coming, and so also in the Second Coming in our times; hence, all of the manifestations of the spiritual powers and divine interventions of the Messiah manifest as Anointed Community, all of the movements of the Holy Spirit and gifts of the Spirit in Anointed Community, and most especially the play of Light Transmission and communication of the Spirit of God (Ruach Elohim), this is the ‘Holy Bride.’

The Messiah indwells us, and our Divine Self is inseparable from the Messiah, and the revelation of the Messiah with us, in us, and as us, the flashing forth of the Light-presence and Light-power in various divine actions, this is the ‘Holy Bride,’ Shekinah of Messiah. Thus, when gnostics speak of the ‘Groom’ and ‘Bride,’ Messiah and Shekinah of Messiah, or ‘Christ’ and ‘Sophia,’ they are not just referring to the persons of Yeshua and Mirya, but more so to the Anointing and to embodiment and revelation of the Divine Presence and Power of the Anointing.

Messiah and Shekinah of Messiah, this speaks of presence of God, the True Light, within each person in Anointed Community, whether a brother or sister; and whether faithful or spiritual, receiving the anointing of the Holy Light and Spirit, so the Messiah, the Spiritual Sun, indwells them - this divine potential being activated, awakened, more or less, all according to the desire to receive, the faith and love, with each individual, and the degree to which they surrender to Divine Grace, and so integrate that Holy Light and Spirit with their soul, and their person and life.

In the Gnostic experience we do, indeed, encounter a Living God, a Living Presence and Living Spirit, and as such experience an ongoing, ‘living’ revelation of God, the True Light.

From a Gnostic perspective a true ‘Christian,’ Christ-like person, will embody the love and compassion of the Messiah, and more so the Divine Presence of the Messiah, and being among the anointed they will have the witness of the Holy Spirit, powers, gifts of the Spirit of God.

Here, speaking of a laughter in contempt, in gnostics gospels Yeshua also has contempt for Jerusalem, the temple - the Holy Land; in fact, in one gospel he warns of archons gathered about Jerusalem and tells his disciples to turn away from it and flee from it as a bastion of ignorance and falsehood, and all the violence and evil that comes with it. Understand, though, that the true temple of God is the Messiah and all who are in Messiah and indwelled by the Messiah - Anointed Community, ‘Body of Messiah’; if indwelled by the Messiah, embodying the Divine Presence, Holy Shekinah, Holy Spirit, so wherever a true ‘Christian’ dwells, and wherever they go, that place is the Holy Land, for God is in that place.

If ever, as is the way in this world, we go on pilgrimage, or a ‘walkabout,’ visiting sacred sites, let us be awake and remember that whatever beauty and holiness we encounter, whatever manifestations of the Divine Presence and Power, that it is the revelation of what is within us, and what is surrounding us on all sides all of the time. In this way let us take up and integrate the blessing and empowerment received and not allow the demiurge and archons - the ignorance and spiritual forces of ignorance, to steal our light-power.

Is this not the Divine Gnosis of the Magdalene - the Tower of the Flock?

And let us remember, according to Gnostic Masters, Gnostic Apostles, we too are co-preachers and co-redeemers with Adonai Yeshua, sharing in the same Self-realization with Yeshua and Mirya - the same anointing with Supernal Light and the Spirit of God; hence all who are anointed being ordained by God Most High (El. Elyon) in a royal priesthood - the Holy and Universal Order of Melchizedek.

In closing we may remind that worship among gnostics is in oneness, not twoness - oneness with the Messiah in God Most High; for everything done in ignorance, twoness, Adonai Yeshua had contempt.

May we be blessed and empowered to abide in the awareness, remembrance, of the Absolute Oneness of God Most High, and so return to be One! Amen.

Yeshua Shalom!
