Psalm 44: Invoking Mercy in the midst of Great Judgment

Psalm 44: Invoking Mercy in the midst of Great Judgment

At the outset open your Bible and take the time to read Psalm 44, and having read the psalm consider this teaching.

On the surface this is a curious psalm, for this psalm speaks of a time when the Community of Israel is faithful in devotion, passionately tending the continuum, keeping the covenant, and yet, in effect, the face of Yahweh is “hidden” from them and they encounter great obstructions that they are not able to overcome; it decries a time of defeat and persecution, or a movement of judgement in the land, that does not arise from the sin or karma of the Holy Community, or the faithful and spiritual elect, but that comes from the karmic matrix of the larger collective of humankind in the world, the mixed multitude and “beasts of the field.”

As we know, at times if we are led astray and give way to sin or negative karma, we may fall into klippot, husks of impurity, and a klippah of Malkut becomes manifest with us. If and when this happens the everflow of the upper Sefirot becomes tainted and obstructed, and we are not able to receive the direct influxes of the Sefirot, and this brings sorrow and suffering, and ill fortune, all manner of troubles in life. This is the “hiding of the face of Yahweh,” and it can happen with an individual initiate or a spiritual community. This can happen, however, at times of a movement of judgment in the greater collective of humankind, when the spiritual forces of the klippot - Kings of Edom, come into dominion, and wickedness and evil is in ascendence among the 70 Nations; quite apart from anything an initiate or spiritual community has done a great darkness can come over a people and land, or the world, generating a dark and hostile psychic atmosphere that can make the invocation and reception of influxes of the Holy Sefirot very challenging and difficult. Thus, in effect, an initiate or spiritual community might seem to experience the face of Yahweh “hidden” from them, even though they are living according to their faith and tending the continuum, keeping the covenant, in righteousness.

In this regard you might consider the time in which we are living and the times that we are entering, and events transpiring among our people and land, and among other peoples and lands in the world; there is a great collective judgment brewing, potentially a very severe judgment, or Strict Judgment, and this is reflected in the thickening psychic atmosphere and the increasing darkness and volatility in it.

Understand, the flows and ebbs of life, and play of fate and fortune, is not just a matter of the karma of the individual, or a community, but rather the individual and community is part of a larger collective karmic matrix of the time and place in which they live, the generation in which they live, and quite naturally there are movements of spiritual forces well beyond their control, forces of the present darkness, archonic and demonic, that dominates this world. From time to time there is an increase of darkness, or wickedness and evil among humans, and a corresponding movement of Great Judgment, or Strict Judgment. Given the ignorance that rules this world it is inevitable, God help us!

When initiates are aware of a movement of judgment within the larger collective of humankind, and they become aware of a growing darkness and hostility in the psychic atmosphere of their people and land, or the world, and they encounter severe obstructions to the invocation of influxes of the Sefirot - Divine Attributes, and to their spiritual works in the world, this is among the psalms they may invoke. As they invoke this psalm they will cleave and unify their soul with Malkut-Kingdom, Yesod-Foundation and Tiferet-Beauty, and with conscious intention they will reach into Hesed-Mercy, invoking an influx of Hesed-Mercy to mitigate Gevurah-Severity for the sake of Anointed Community, invoking refuge, sanctuary, in the midst of great darkness and hostility, a shielding of the spiritual works of the Holy Community.

As perhaps you might imagine this is also a psalm invoked in the face of strong psychic or magical assaults in the Art of Solomon, a psalm diminishing the power of false prophets and sorcerers that persecute and attack Anointed Community.

May we abide in the shelter of the Almighty, Shaddai! Amen.

Shaddai Shalom!

A section from Psalm 44:

You are my King and my God;
you command[a] victories for Jacob.
5 Through you we push down our foes;
through your name we tread down our assailants.
6 For not in my bow do I trust,
nor can my sword save me.
7 But you have saved us from our foes,
and have put to confusion those who hate us.
8 In God we have boasted continually,
and we will give thanks to your name forever. Selah

Here is a practice taught in the tradition for 'selah.'

Silence your mind, quiet your vital and be still, abiding in the presence of the One, and merge the silence in you with the immeasurable silence of the One, the Infinite (Ain Sof).

Alternatively:

Be gathered in, abiding in silence, listening to the Wind of God blowing, and go deeper still, and listen and hear the still small voice, or speaking silence, and understand the word of the Lord (Yahweh).

Blessings!

Shalom to all,
The final lines of the psalm are:
"Arise for our help,
And redeem us for Thy mercy's sake."

This part of the psalm feels like a deep prayer and is becoming like a mantra that is helpful in turning my attention to what is so greatly needed.

May we be safe in the shelter of the Most High,
Mark
