A Prayer to the Spirit of Prayer
Unless the Spirit of the Holy One puts the words in my mouth,
How shall I invoke and pray a true prayer;
Save that the Mother Spirit prays with, in and through me,
How shall there be any power in my prayer?
I am as dead apart from the Holy Spirit,
For my heart is silent without her,
And my mind is sorely dull;
Unless she moves me,
I am unmoved,
Like a golem, I am without life!
Shall I struggle for words when there are no words,
Or take it upon myself to break the silence?
Perhaps when she does not speak,
That, too, is prayer,
How should I know?
I will open myself to her,
And seek to know and understand nothing,
I shall not seek to be somebody, but will abide empty of myself;
If it pleases her to speak, let her speaks what she wills,
If it pleases her to be silent, then let her be silent as long as she likes;
As for me, I will calmly abide, waiting upon the Spirit of the Holy One,
Moving as she moves me, remaining still as she remains still,
I will let her do as she wills with me,
All as the Holy One desires!
One moment she is nowhere to be seen,
And the next she fills endless space,
She is like the wind, known only in her movement,
An invisible Divine Presence, only seen by those who seek her,
Yet never found, save when she chooses to reveal herself –
What an unpredictable and mysterious lover she is,
The Spirit of the Beloved,
How awesome and wonderful!
O Spirit of Prayer, Spirit of the Prophets,
Whether in Voice or in Silence,
I do not care, I welcome you,
I only pray that you are with me,
Abiding in the faith that you are!
