Hiearchies of the Celestial Powers

Divine Powers of the Celestial Spheres

The Greater Key of Solomon is, in effect, a form of celestial or planetary magic, though it also includes the play of wonderworking with the elemental forces and four directions of the sacred circle. Thus, the first step in taking up the Solomonic Art is a study and contemplation of the celestial spheres, along with invocations of their corresponding Divine Powers to become acquainted with their force or energy-intelligence.

The Greater Ritual of the Hexagram is the most common method for the invocation of the influence of the celestial spheres, but as the aspirant seeks to take up the Solomonic Art they will want to take up invocations of specific spheres, calling upon Ha-Shem and invoking the full hierarchy of powers associated with each celestial sphere.

As has been said in the introductions to the essential teachings on the seals, the Divine Name, archangel and order of angels of the Sefirah corresponding with the celestial sphere forms the “hierarchy of the planet,” but along with this there is a seal of each planet, as well as an intelligence, a spirit and an “olympic spirit.” The mystical figure or seal of the planet, the sigil of the intelligence and spirit, are derived from what is called the “magic squares” or kamea of the planet, and the sigils of the olympic spirits are drawn from other sources – these can be found in any number of reference books on ceremonial magic.

Essentially, in the tradition the intelligence of the celestial sphere is the power of that sphere corresponding with Hesed-Mercy, and the spirit is the power of the sphere corresponding with Gevurah-Judgment. As such, the intelligence is the power of the celestial sphere as a direct emanation of the corresponding Sefirah, and is a divine being or angel of God, while the spirit, on the other hand, is the klippah of the celestial sphere and is invoked as a fierce oath-bound guardian.

The olympic spirits are angels of the archons corresponding with the celestial spheres, and therefore, likewise they are invoked as oath-bound spirits, although by nature they are titanic or admixed, and they are not so fierce and dark as the spirit of the celestial sphere.

Thus, for the most part, the intelligence and the archonic angels of the celestial spheres are invoked, while the spirits of the celestial spheres are not invoked, save by adepts in the Art of Solomon who are called to practices working with the wrathful palace. In this context, under the dominion of the Name, archangel and order of angels, the intelligences and archonic angels of the celestial spheres are part of the hierarchy of Divine Powers and are invoked for acquaintanceship with the celestial forces, as well as for general spiritual works with celestial forces apart from the invocation of the seals of Solomon.

When invoking the full hierarchy of spiritual powers associated with a celestial sphere usually a scroll will be made as a talisman, and all of the corresponding names will be written upon it, along with the mystical figure or “seal,” and the corresponding sigils; then, in sacred ceremony, the corresponding hexagram will be used and the names of the hierarchy will be called upon to invoke the spiritual power of the celestial sphere, and usually a prayer of binding the spirit or klippah of the sphere will also be spoken.

This same hierarchy of Divine Powers is invoked in the ceremonies for the consecration and invocation of the seals of Solomon. Therefore it is only natural that an initiate will work with the hierarchies of Divine Powers before taking up the creation and consecration of any seals of Solomon.

The intelligences, spirits and archonic angels of the celestial spheres are as follows:

Shabbatai: Agiel is the intelligence, Zazel the spirit, and the angel of the archon is Araithron.

Tdedek: Yofiel is the intelligence, Hishmael the spirit, and the angel of the archon is Bethor.

Madim: Grafiel is the intelligence, Bartzabel the spirit, and the angel of the archon is pheleg.

Shemesh: Nakhiel is the intelligence, Sorath the spirit, and the angel of the archon is Och.

Nogah: Hagiel is the intelligence, Kedemel the spirit, and the angel of the archon is Hagith.

Kokab: Tiriel is the intelligence, Tafthartharath the spirit, and the angel of the archon is Ophiel.

Lavanah: Malkah Be-Tarshishim Ve-Ad-Be-Ruach Sheharim is the intelligence, Hashmodia the spirit, and the angel of the archon is Phul.

*Very often initiates will include the mystical figure of the planet and the sigil of its intelligence on the backside of the seals of Solomon when they make them for spiritual works.

When a novice initiate of the art takes up a continuum for acquaintance with the celestial powers they will perform the Greater Ritual of the Hexagram each day, and they will invoke the full hierarchy of Divine Powers corresponding to the celestial sphere attributed to that day of the week, invoking the blessings of Ha-Shem through those spiritual powers. Thus, throughout the cycle of the week all of the hierarchies of the celestial spheres will be invoked. Typically, when seeking a deep acquaintanceship with the celestial forces they will take up a continuum with them in this way for a full lunar cycle, beginning and ending on a new moon – hence, for four weeks.

In a continuum of acquaintanceship no scrolls or talismans need to be made, but rather such things are made when there is an invocation of the celestial forces for specific spiritual work. Once an initiate has tended a continuum of acquaintanceship, of course, in order to deepen their knowledge and understanding of the celestial forces on an experiential level, they will then seek to invoke each celestial hierarchy for a corresponding spiritual work, practicing the direction of the force of celestial spheres with conscious theurgic or magical intention. When they have become more familiar with the celestial forces in this way, then the novice will be ready to begin invoking some of the seals of Solomon, having acquired some education on an experiential level.

This concludes the essential teaching on the full hierarchy of Divine Powers of the Celestial Spheres in the Solomonic Art.

May God be praised! Amen.

Dear Tau,
When performing the Greater Hexagram Ritual to become acquainted with the celestial powers, do we perform the whole ritual, drawing all the hexagrams and only invoking the intelligences/archonic through the hexagram relevant to that planet? Or do we omit the drawing of all hexagrams save the one relevant to the day?

Blessings to you in the Holy Light of the Messiah!

In general initiates will trace the corresponding hexagram, or pentagram, that express their theurgic intention in a ceremony. The tracing of the full array of hexagrams, or pentagrams, if there is an intention of the Great Convocation - an invocation of all spiritual powers, supernal and spiritual, celestial and elemental, and so on, per the passage “Let us create human kind in our image, after our likeness…” That, or when initiates take up a continuum for a time for the generation of greater light-power, merit, or a greater stirring of the serpent power and greater generation of the body of light. Otherwise, only those sacred hexagram or pentagrams needed are used.

The order of invocation is always in descent beginning with the corresponding Name of God; hence, being rooted in the Holy One and heaven, consecrated to the Holy One and heaven, and therefore a divine action.

I do not suggest the invocation of the planetary spirits, any more than I’d suggest the invocation of the demons associated with the celestial spheres. The planetary intelligences are divine spirits and are invoked by all initiates, including novice initiates, but the planetary spirits are celestial klippot, unclean and evil spirits. The planetary spirits, like the spirits of the Goetia, are only invoked by very experienced initiates who know the ways of the wrathful palace and have received the spiritual empowerments for practices of the wrathful palace; hence, those who have deep understanding of the way of transformation and the play of the pacification, enrichment, subjugation and destruction of klippotic forces in the way of transformation - the work of redemption among the dark and hostile forces.

Shalom!
