Greetings and blessings in the light of the Messiah!
It is the Holy Spirit that leads souls astray, and through the Holy Spirit that they become lost – in Christian jargon this is a very wild proclamation, for to be “led astray” means taken from the church, or to be drawn into heretical views, and so also a “lost soul” implies this, the idea of a soul lost to Christ and therefore destined to hell. On one hand we could say that this implies the movement of the Holy Spirit within and behind all that transpires, the power of the Holy Spirit operating even within and behind archonic and demonic forces, the klippotic forces being a “secret operation of the Holy Spirit,” as taught in our Christian Kabbalah. On the other hand, though, and no doubt the intention of the holy apostle preaching this, we may also understand this to speak of the Holy Spirit drawing souls from the exterior church, and bondage to dogmatic doctrines, rites and rituals, into the interior church and a direct communion with Christ and God, the True Light; hence, the Holy Spirit awakening the deeper spiritual, or mystical inclination within souls, and the maturation of faith into gnosis, or as we would say, Habad (wisdom, understanding and knowledge).
The same gospel also teaches that if we go down in the living waters of baptism, but rise up from them without receiving the true chrism, the anointing of the Holy Spirit, and we call ourselves “Christian,” we have borrowed the name and must give it back, paying back what we have borrowed at interest; but, if we receive the Holy Spirit, the true chrism, then the name of Christian, “Christ-like,” is ours as a gift, and a gift does not need to be given back, or paid back, but it is ours to keep in this world, and in the world to come.
As we know there are three “races” in humanity, there is the bestial, material humankind, the faithful, or psychic humankind, and there is the spiritual, or elect humanity, the latter being called the “Community of Israel,” not through a physical birth, but rather through a spiritual rebirth, the actual reception of the Holy Spirit. Bestial, or material humanity, represents souls not destined to come to faith in this life, while the faithful, or psychic humanity, represents those who will come to have faith in this life, but will remain in the ignorance, the illusion of separation, and worship God in mainstream religions. Spiritual, or elect humanity, however, are those souls destined to awaken, those we would call “mystics,” who seek an inward and direct communion with the Divine, or who seek an actual self-realization or enlightenment; hence, those who seek to draw near to God, and yet more, who desire to experience conscious union with God.
These three “races,” of course, indicate three gradations in the development and evolution of souls within the human life-wave, and within each of these three gradations there are many gradations of evolution, many gradations of consciousness and intelligence. As souls evolve, and generate positive karma, or merit, the conditions necessary for greater movements of the Holy Spirit, or Divine Grace, are created, and therefore souls become able to receive direct influxes of the Holy Spirit, direct influxes of the Supernal Light, and they are able to engage a full conscious evolution, laboring for an actual self-realization, or full enlightenment and liberation.
Those who are “led astray” are the spiritual elect, touched or chosen by the Holy Spirit, souls selected by the Spirit of God because they are mature, or ripe for the harvest. It is souls that are ripe and mature who are taken up by the Holy Spirit and guided by the Holy Spirit in the Great Ascension, the Great Exodus; and this spiritual realization is not accomplished by the work or efforts of souls alone, but rather it is accomplished through Christ and the Holy Spirit in them, Divine Grace.
The reception of the Holy Spirit, or experience of Light Transmission, is essential in the awakening of souls in Christ, or the enlightenment and liberation of souls; and we may say that it is the reception of the Holy Spirit, the experience of Light Transmission, that is our true initiation as spiritual Christians, or as followers of the Way.
As the word initiation implies, however, the reception of the Holy Spirit is a new beginning – it is the beginning of a new cycle of the evolution of the soul beyond what we would typically call “human” into divine and supernal being, “Christed Being,” or Enlightened Being. Basically speaking, it is the beginning of our self-realization in Christ, the beginning of a process of self-transformation, the fruition of which is the dawn of Supernal or Messianic Consciousness, and the experience of conscious unification with God.
In this world, if we are touched by the Holy Spirit in this way, here we will feel “lost,” or we will feel as an “outsider,” an “alien” or a “stranger” – we will know that we are not of this world, that this world is not our home, and it becomes a feeling of wandering in a vast wilderness, quite “lost” in this world. Likewise, at the outset of our initial awakening, or our initial reception of the Holy Spirit, while there might be great joy, very swiftly there will follow a great consternation in our soul, for although we have experienced closeness to God, so also we will feel how removed from God we are, and a passionate yearning, longing, for greater nearness to God will arise, and yet more, a passionate yearning for union with God, our Beloved. You might say, we become “homesick!”
Our journey through various gradations of nearness leads us through many wonderful and blissful experiences, but so also through many dark nights of the soul; there is a constant play of ascending and descending, apparent progress and regress, though with every progress there is an experience of greater nearness, or an experience of deeper union.
This fire, on one hand, is our passionate desire for the Beloved, and the Holy Spirit kindles this in us, and if we are willing, makes it blaze until we are utterly consumed, burnt away, by the fire of Divine Passion – in the instant we are completely consumed, only the Beloved remains, union. On the other hand, it is an awakening of desire in full, and a singularity of desire, through which all desire enters into cessation – in that instant there is a full influx of Supernal Light, Supernal Grace, profound spiritual illumination.
There is also another open secret in a fire of spiritual illumination that becomes “blackened,” for however great our illumination, or our knowledge, understanding and wisdom, Christ and God are immeasurably greater, and however lofty the gradation of higher consciousness and greater intelligence we might embody, we will find that there are countless gradations of higher consciousness and greater intelligence beyond – but the infinite greatness of God, and the endless nature of our ascension in consciousness is pure joy to the awakened soul, a cause of perpetual awe and wonder in the Shekinah of El Elyon, God Most High.
Here it must also be said that the very same process of individuals coming into being in Christ must also happen with groups, or a community coming into being in Christ; as much as with individuals the same process must occur with collectives.
These are some initial thoughts that arose as I contemplated this topic you have brought up; I believe I’ll pause and wait to see where the Holy Spirit might carry our discussion.
O Adonai, we pray, set us on fire with Your Holy Spirit, and let the fire of Your Holy Spirit consume us, leaving only Your Truth and Light. Amen.
Peace be with you!
