Gnosis of Angels

#1 Postby matthew mcclellan » Wed Mar 06, 2019 11:37 am

Shalom Tau Malachi and friends, I wanted to ask some questions in reference to angels and about the upcoming book "Gnosis of Angels". How does one open spiritual sight in order to see and commune with angels, or if it is an act of grace how does one know when the Spirit is opening up ones ability to see in that way? If the Shekinah desires one to work with a particular angel how does one get the permission or understanding in order to do so? How does She reveal Her intentions to an initiate for why and how She wants them to work with an angel? and my last two questions are: Will the book "Gnosis of Angels" teach these things in detail, and can we anticipate the book coming out this year?

Grace and peace to you in Messiah Yeshua!

I do not know that all of the questions put forth will be answered in a single writing. To do them justice would make for a very long post. Here, though, we can begin a contemplation and discourse on communion with angels and see where the Holy Spirit leads us. As we do, may God bless us and be with us, and may we abide in the good company of the Holy Shekinah - the great luminous assembly of tzaddikim and angels, or ‘saints’ and angels. Amen.

First we can share that all spiritual gifts, whether faith, hope and love, or prophecy, wonderworking or healing, or teaching, preaching or apostleship, or any of the many other gifts such as seeing, hearing and feeling angelic presences, or direct conscious communion with angels, come through Divine Grace, they are all blessings, gifts, that are given by the Spirit of God, for they are all powers and actions of the Divine Presence, Holy Shekinah, Holy Spirit. If and when any spiritual gift, spiritual power, is given, we will know because we will experience it and witness its effects, its manifestation. As an example, if on any occasion the Holy Spirit opens in us the ability to see, hear or feel angels it will be obvious, suddenly we will see them or hear them or feel them. If sight is restored in a blind person during a healing movement will anyone need to tell them that they can see, or is it they, who through their own experience of blindness and being made to see, that will know and bear witness of what God has done? Any spiritual gift that can be named is much like this, but it is true that the Holy Spirit can come upon us suddenly and we may be very surprised by the manifestation of the presence and power of God with us.

In a well known and luminous portion of 1 Corinthians, chapters twelve and thirteen, St. Paul addressed spiritual gifts and seeking them. There he teaches us to take up whatever spiritual gifts are given to us and to give praise and thanks to God for them, and he encourages us to invoke and pray, and to ask God for greater spiritual gifts. Then he goes in to cite faith, hope and love as the greatest of spiritual gifts, proclaiming love as the greatest gifts of all. What he does in this is explain the foundation of all spiritual gifts and their purpose, as well as the essential preparation of the soul for the realization of the highest stations and states, which correspond with the manifestation of greater spiritual gifts. Understand, by citing faith, hope and love, he is speaking of the cultivation of the Divine Attributes, Divine Actions, and so a resemblance to the Messiah and God, the True Light. Also understand, on a spiritual and metaphysical level resemblance, similitude, likeness, corresponds with nearness, and when there is a full resonance and resemblance, the realization of oneness.

Concerning the spiritual gifts of which you are inquiring, and your desire for a deeper communion with the angels of heaven, angels of God. If anyone resembles God, and so also angels, do you suppose angels would take special notices of them, be attracted to them, draw near them and minister to them, entering into the communion of that soul with the Divine Presence? Indeed, they would, and they do!

I can share with you that the keys to the reception of any and all spiritual gifts are shared in the teachings of the Straight Path, and the practice of the Six Essentials and Three Root - there are teachings on all of these here in this forum, and several other forums on the board. In terms of the Straight Path, we may recall the practice of seeking to ‘see with God, hear with God and feel with God; quite naturally through this practice a brother or sister may be gifted with seeing angelic presences and heavens.

Now, I will share an open secret with you. When Paul wrote of love as the greatest spiritual gift, do understand that love draws near seeking union, and the fruition of love is oneness - conscious union; if and when in love we give ourselves completely to God, so God gives Godself completely to us - hence, all Divine Attributes and Powers, all gifts of the Holy Spirit are set into us, all as in love we serve others, serving the kingdom of heaven and God Most High. Whatever spiritual power, spiritual gift, we need in our labors and service will be given to us, and in the Spirit angels will move with us to bring about what heaven and God intends.

Consider the angels for a moment, and what they are in God and what they do in God. They are, as their names relate, spiritual forces, powers, and actions of the Presence of God, the Holy Shekinah, Holy Spirit, and as we know they adore and worship God in heaven, and they are servants of God, taking up actions, missions, in creation according to the will, the desire, of God, and specifically, if an angel of God, the True Light, they labor to bring about the realization of all in God, the return of all to God - hence, the eventual enlightenment and liberation of all. In the love of the Messiah and Holy One we become servants to one another, even slaves to one another in Anointed Community, seeking always, and in anyway possible, to be of service, to be of benefit, all for the love of God, aware of God in all people, all creatures, all things; in this we resemble angels, and it may be that more and more we abide in their good company and they minister to us, move with us and reveal themselves to us, even gifting us with something of their knowledge and power in movements of the Holy Spirit, all as God wills and ordains.

Do understand that in the answering of prayers and in any movement of the Holy Spirit angels of God are involved, in the play of initiation and light transmission, the imparting of blessings and empowerments, prophecy and revelation, the giving of new teachings, the working of wonders, healing, and so on, in all of these movements of the Divine Presence, Holy Shekinah, Holy Spirit, angels are present and active. If, indeed, in faith and love we invoke and pray, or we take up sacred ceremony and worship, angels are with us, the good company of the Holy Shekinah, and likewise, gathering together in the Blessed Name for sacred discourse or for devotions angels gather with us. In invocation and prayer, in meditation and contemplation, as our inwardness deepens, so does our sensitivity to the Holy Shekinah, Holy Spirit, and we can feel when the Spirit takes up the movement; likewise, in the same way, in a Spirit-filled assembly, we can feel when the Spirit comes upon us or the Spirit is moving. Quite naturally this sense of feeling, this awareness, can and does expand, and we may feel, be aware, of angelic presences coming and going, abiding with us and moving with us in the Holy Shekinah, Holy Spirit.

If we live according to our faith and knowledge, cleaving to the Messiah in the Holy One, and we tend a daily continuum of devotion - prayer, meditation, contemplation, and we invoke often, just as God is always with us, so also angels of God. At first this is a matter of faith, not having seen, heard or felt them, but over time it will become a matter of knowledge, for whether through seeing, hearing, feeling, or through direct ‘knowing’ which corresponds with an even more intimate communion in oneness of the Divine Presence and so also the angels, we will experience their presences and movements in the Spirit.

As Adonai Yeshua taught us, ‘seek first the kingdom of heaven and its righteousness, and everything else will be added to you,’ so likewise it may be said ‘first seek God and find God, and you will find the angels of God.’

In this light, praying and asking to see angels, quite naturally our deeper prayer will be to see the face of God - but then do understand that the ‘Little Face’ (Zer Anpin) is seen in tzaddikim and angels, and in truth, if one learns to ‘look and see,’ in all creatures.

There is more I wish to share about prayer and invocation and angels, and more I wish to share about the reality of the world of angels and their relationship with creation and God, but this seems enough for one writing. I’ll share this now and begin another writing to carry the contemplation further and address other questions, and hopefully what’s shared may be of some help for you and others who might have similar questions.

Cleaving to the Messiah and Holy One, may we be blessed to abide awake in the good company of the Holy Shekinah! Amen.

Shalom Aleichem!

Blessings to you in the Holy Light of Messiah Yeshua!

As has been shared, wherever the Divine Presence, Holy Shekinah, Holy Spirit, moves and manifests, so also do the angels of heaven, angels of God. They are present in virtually all movements, divine actions, of the Spirit of God. Understanding this, first and foremost in the invocation of angels and seeking to become aware of them and entertain communion with them we tend a continuum of inward cleaving to the Messiah and Holy One, and the invocation of the Names of God - the principle revealed names, cognomens and the 144 Names of God, or the gevurot and hasidim, which we have taught about elsewhere.

In the Straight Path - Gnostic Path, we pray and pray and pray, seeking to cultivate prayer without ceasing, and likewise, to this end, we invoke often, calling upon the Holy Name of God in prayer and worship. In fact, as taught in the writings on Straight Path we shared last summer, gatherings for the invocation of Names of God, intoning and chanting them individually, in various combinations, as well as permutations and unifications of them, cleaving to the Most High, abiding in the awareness of oneness, is a very common and powerful way of gnostic devotion, worship, rejoicing in the Divine Presence. Quite naturally and spontaneously, through God’s grace and mercy, the spaces in which such invocations circles are performed fill with angelic presences and subtle glory, and curiously enough sisters and brothers find that without asking for anything in prayer by thought or word, ‘prayers are answered,’ wishes fulfilled.

In times of prayer and invocation, in our own daily prayers, as well as gatherings, we call upon the various Names of God, and we study and contemplate them, and as we do over some time, with the development of our interior life and communion, we become more and more intimately acquainted with them, having greater and greater knowledge of their correspondences, and the supernal and spiritual power that is in them. This naturally builds up our knowledge and skill in calling upon them, and spiritual discernment of the specific Names of God to be called upon in invocation and prayer, or sacred ceremony, associated with various spiritual works and movements. It is this knowledge and skill with Names of God, and spiritual discernment or inspiration of the Spirit calling upon them in prayer and sacred ceremony, that will naturally open the way to knowledge and discernment with regard to names of angels and invocations of them in prayer and sacred ceremony.

Understand, all of the knowledge and power of angels is contained in the Names of God, their knowledge and power emanating from the Names of God, Divine Attributes, Sefirot. Thus, seeking knowledge and communion with angels, first initiates seek intimate, experiential knowledge of the Holy Names of God. Essentially, the knowledge shared in the Gnostic Path and Christian Kabbalah of the names of angels and their invocations is an extension and expansion of the invocation of the Names of God, drawing specific spiritual powers from the Names as we labor in prayer and sacred ceremony to offer spiritual assistance to those in need or responding to various situations, circumstances or events arising; hence, it’s in the labor of the harvest of souls - the true “Great Work.” In this you may understand that the invocation of angels is founded upon the invocations of the Names of God, and true knowledge and understanding of angels evolves from knowledge and understanding of the Holy Names.

As we study and contemplate the many Names of God, and we pray and invoke often, and we learn to go within, and go deeper still, and abide open and sensitive to the Messiah and Holy Spirit, more and more we will become aware of the natural and spontaneous arising of angelic presences with us, and having good knowledge of the Names of God, this becomes true empowerment for the study and contemplation of angels, and for effective direct and conscious invocation of them as we hold a continuum of prayer for the people and the world, and seek a more intimate knowledge of heaven and God.

The key of invocation of the Names of God, though, and then those of angels, is that it is done in faith and love - inward cleaving, and true knowledge of the Holy Names; lest it would be calling upon The Name in vain, as in the way of a sorcerer, God forbid!

Those who are early in their journey on the mystical path and newcomers to the mystical path might wonder why we are so insistent upon the development of a strong continuum of daily prayers and invocation, a deeper spiritual education, and deepening of the interior life and communion with God as we discuss communion with angels. It must be understood, though, that the true aim of aspirants of the mystical path, or gnostic path, is knowledge of God Most High, and more so an ever greater experience of nearness and oneness with God, the fruition of which is the experience of states of Christ Consciousness or God Consciousness. Thus our worship is of God, the True Light, not the angels, our heavenly siblings and fellow creatures. Likewise it needs to be understood that there are, literally, countless angels, countless cosmic and spiritual forces. There are, indeed, countless angels of God, supernal angels, angels of creation, and righteous, luminous spirits, but there are also angels of archons and impure spirits, and there are angels of Satan, demons and dark spirits. If we are not well established in the Messiah and Holy One, or the Divine Presence, Holy Shekinah, Holy Spirit, and we invoke ‘angels’ in a state of impurity, for selfish or prideful intentions, not in true faith and love, not for the sake of service to heaven and God, it will not be angels of God that are invoke or that are with us, but rather ‘angels’ of the Other Side, deceiving spirits that may cause harm or lead us astray from the Path of Return. Thus, cleaving to the Messiah in God Most High, and tending the continuum of prayer and invocation with the Holy Names in faith and love, and passionate devotion, inward cleaving, is integral to communion with the angels of heaven and God.

Do understand, for those who have faith and love, and who cleave - those established in the Sanctuary of Grace, there is power in the Holy Names to discern and put to the test apparent ‘angels’ and spirits, and to fend off the assaults of dark and hostile forces that may occur early in the journey; there is a power of sublimation and subjugation of cosmic and spiritual forces in the Messiah, the Anointing.

Now when we speak of invocation in the Straight Path the intention is to invoke an awareness of intimate nearness, oneness, with the Messiah in God Most High, so that the invocation is from God to God, the Divine Presence in us taking up the invocation; hence, as we invoke and pray we seek to abide in union with the Divine Presence within us and surrounding us on all sides, and when indeed we are unified with the Divine Presence, the indwelling Messiah and Holy Spirit, so it is that the Divine Presence invokes and prays. As we take up this way of invocation and prayer in the Gnostic Path, and as we experience a greater and greater nearness, and begin to glimpse, taste, the reality of oneness, quite naturally a greater knowledge and power manifests with us, and greater spiritual gifts, and there is a growing sensitivity, awareness, of the various movements of the Spirit of God and angels. It’s a natural development of our union, communion, in the Divine Presence.

As the daily continuum of invocation and prayer progresses, and the corresponding worship of God in spirit and truth - oneness, and the interior life of the initiate deepens, if and when there is a leading of the Spirit to take up direct invocations of angels there will be inspirations and illuminations of the Spirit that give guidance - these inspirations will be set into our hearts and minds, whether for a seeking of greater knowledge of God or spiritual works in prayer and sacred ceremony for people. When we are well acquainted and knowledgable of the Names of God through study and contemplation, and calling upon them in prayer and invocation, as the Spirit inspires, so we may study and contemplate teachings on angels and develop a vocabulary and some basic knowledge of them, which the Spirit might take up to bless us with further insights and revelations of the heavens and angels. The various invocations and visualizations that are taught all are for the sake of opening our mind and heart to the reality of angels, and to greater revelations of the Spirit of God and angels, so that as God wills, we might experience a deeper communion with the Divine Presence and angels. Do understand, though, that the appearance of angels from one revelation or action to another can be very different, and that whatever their appearance in revelations to us it is not their true appearance as they are in themselves, let alone as they are in God; likewise we may say the same of the names that are given in revelations, they are not their true names in the Light Continuum.

It is indeed possible, and it does happen, that angels may reveal themselves to us when it is ordained by God and we may see them in a dream or a vision, or through spiritual sight, or even as though the visitation of a seemingly physical entity, a human being or animal, and likewise there are angels that can merge with a person or animal, taking them up for a brief time to communicate with us. In these various ways we may ‘see’ angels. Over the generations some mystics, some initiates, have been gifted with the ability to frequently see angels and have regular communion with them in dream and vision, and who were blessed to experience many dramatic visitations with angels. Most often, however, communion with angels is more subtle and sublime, and more intimate, and even with those who have the spiritual gift of seeing them their communion reaches much deeper, going beyond ‘sight’ into hearing, feeling and direct knowledge of angels in experiences of intimate nearness and oneness with them in the Divine Presence.

It must be understood that if a person has sincere faith and love, having received the Holy Light and Spirit from above, and that Holy Light and Spirit of the Messiah dwells in them, in their communion with the Messiah and Holy Spirit they are in communion with the angels and the kingdom of heaven, whether or not as yet they are aware of it. It is just that early on angels are nearer and more intimate than many faithful imagine or realize, and because of that nearness and intimacy they are not able to notice their various contacts, encounters, with angels and spirits in the Divine Presence. You see, just as the Spirit of God speaks in our hearts and minds so also do angels, and very often when the Spirit gives us guidance, new knowledge, insights and illuminations, it is through angels - they speak in our own thoughts and feelings, in deep communion, not outwardly but inwardly. There are those secrets that only God and God alone can reveal to us, or that the Spirit of God may reveal that are not known to the angels of heaven, but much of the knowledge given to us by the Spirit is through angels - angels of creation and supernal angels, along with the spirits of tzaddikim. In a similar way, do understand that when our prayers are answered, when the Spirit moves, shifting the matrix and flow of reality and life, generally speaking these are the actions of the angels in the Divine Presence, Holy Shekinah, Holy Spirit - angels executing the action according to the ‘judgment of heaven’ and will of God.

As we know, the heavens are composed of angels, and angels form the metaphysical structure or matrix of creation, so they are the cosmic and spiritual forces within and behind creation, the heavens and the earth, all realms and worlds. As has been said, there is a vast array of ‘angels,’ divine, archon and demonic, and as well as angels of creation there are supernal angels, angels of the Pleroma of Light and Supernal Shekinah. The angels of creation, in effect, are the interface of Yahweh and the Supernal Shekinah with creation, and are the active agents, powers, of God in creation. Just as God veils and conceals Godself, allowing for the individuation of living spirits and souls, so also most often the angels veil and conceal themselves, their works and actions, save when the Spirit of God inspires them to reveal themselves and to make their presence and actions known; hence, when there is good reason and it will serve a purpose, and so God wills it. You see, angels understand that there is strong tendency in human beings, mortals, to want to worship greater and lesser divinities in place of God Most High, and angels of God are not inclined to encourage or allow worship of themselves, but they seek to inspire worship of God and seek to glorify God, laboring always for the return of spirits and souls to God, the True Light. More so, in the case of many people, even among people of faith, a direct encounter with angels could be very disturbing, agitating or frightful to them and could cause an interference, distraction in their lives, or even psychic or spiritual harm. Thus, most often it is best for them to render invisible spiritual assistance, and hide their presence and works; in so doing, the faithful and spiritual might understand that, in truth, all blessings and bounty come from God, and they may see what God has done through the angels, and so turn to God in prayer, and give praise and thanks to God, and God alone. The same is also true with great tzaddikim, very often they conceal the Divine Presence that is within and around them and labor in secret so that God might be praised and glorified, not them.

So in reality angels are near to us, as God is with us, so also angels are with us, but generally speaking they are invisible companions engaged in actions of invisible spiritual assistance; as our inwardness deepens, and with it our openness and sensitivity to the Spirit of God, we may become more and more aware of their good company though, all in the companionship of the Divine Presence, Holy Shekinah.

Here I’m inclined to pause and wait upon the Holy Spirit.

Cleaving to Messiah may you be blessed to abide in the good company of the Shekinah of Messiah! Amen.

Shalom Aleichem!
